Cyanotype on Fabric — How to Make Textile Prints with Sunlight

on

What Is Cyanotype on Fabric?

Cyanotype is a historical photographic process that reacts to UV light, turning coated surfaces deep blue. While it’s often done on paper, fabric printing is growing in popularity. With the right preparation, you can create stunning blue images on cotton bags, T-shirts, or natural linen.

What You Need

  • Cyanotype chemicals: Ferric Ammonium Citrate + Potassium Ferricyanide

  • Absorbent textile: e.g., cotton tote bag, linen, or canvas

  • A brush or foam applicator

  • Sunlight or UV lamp

  • A flat surface & plexiglass

  • Gloves for safe handling

Step-by-Step: How to Cyanotype on Fabric

1. Prepare Your Emulsion
Mix equal parts of the two cyanotype solutions with water. Work in dim light.

2. Apply the Solution to the Fabric
Use a foam brush to coat your fabric evenly. Let it dry in the dark.

3. Arrange Your Design
Place leaves, flowers, or a printed negative onto the coated textile.

4. Expose to Sunlight
Put a plexiglass sheet over your setup and place it in the sun for 10–20 minutes.

5. Rinse and Reveal
After exposure, rinse thoroughly with water. The blue color intensifies as it dries.

Best Results and Tips

  • Use natural fibers (cotton, linen)

  • Stretch the fabric to avoid wrinkles

  • Protect your hands with nitrile gloves

  • Use high-quality chemicals for better contrast

  • For deep blue tones: expose longer
