Apply cyanotype solution to paper or suitable absorbent fabric with a foam brush. Choose one brush measuring 25, 50, 75 or 100 mm wide, or the complete set containing all four sizes. The photograph of four brushes shows the set; an individual size contains one brush.
Which width suits your work?
25 mm is useful for small areas and edges. A 50 or 75 mm brush covers a wider part of the paper with each stroke. Choose 100 mm for broad areas, provided your mixing tray is wide enough. A broad brush does not replace a detail brush: another shape is more practical for fine lines. The measurement is the foam-head width, not the brush length.
Apply a controlled coating
Prepare the solution according to your cyanotype instructions and pour a small working amount into a separate tray. Work in subdued light on a flat, protected surface. Spread the liquid with light, overlapping strokes and avoid puddles. Test a small piece: paper absorption, pressure and liquid quantity affect the coating. Let it dry in the dark before exposure. A foam brush has no bristles, but it does not guarantee a streak-free result.
Care and contents
Keep the brush for creative use. Clean it according to the instructions for your solution and let it dry thoroughly. Inspect the head before reuse; replace a brush that sheds or is damaged. Its working life depends on the liquid and how you use it. Do not use these brushes with shellac or lacquer, as stated on the handle.
