Gouache & Tempera
Gouache and tempera provide matte, opaque color, but differ in binder, reactivability and the use for which they are intended.
Gouache for design, tempera for accessible projects
Artist's gouache usually contains more pigment and can be mixed into flat colors or diluted into more transparent layers. Tempera and gouache are practical for studies, school and decorative work. Compare opacity, lightfastness and surface compatibility if the work will be stored or framed for a long time.
Avoid cracks and muddy mixtures
Use sturdy, slightly absorbent paper and do not build up thick layers indefinitely. Many gouache paints remain water-soluble; therefore work with few brushstrokes over a dry layer. Mix colors on a clean palette, keep light shades separate from high-staining pigments and allow work to dry flat.
