Gilding

Gilding requires a coherent choice of substrate, adhesive, metal leaf or metal powder and a finish that suits indoor or outdoor use.

Imitation metal leaf, real gold leaf and gilding wax

Imitation metal leaf is accessible for decorative projects but can oxidize and often needs protection. Real gold leaf reacts differently and is chosen based on carat and technique. Gilding wax and metallic paste provide accents more quickly without the effect of a fully laid leaf. Choose a gilding adhesive or traditional gilding ground that suits the material and the desired gilding method.

Timing determines the adhesion

Prepare a smooth, dust-free surface and follow the indicated waiting time of the adhesive. Apply the thin gold leaf or imitation leaf with dry, clean tools and work without drafts. Only remove loose residue after sufficient adhesion and test varnish or patina on a test piece, because the color and shine of the metal can change.
