Graphite and drawing pencils are mainly chosen for hardness, core quality, point stability and the tone that is created with normal drawing pressure.

From construction line to dark accent

H gradations remain lighter and maintain a fine point; B grades are softer, darker and easier to blend. An HB or F is versatile for writing and first lines. For a set, a well-considered distribution of hardnesses is more useful than many successive gradations that you can hardly distinguish.

Paper, sharpening and erasers

Use a sharp point for detail and a longer sharpened core for broad side strokes. Structured paper makes the grain visible; smooth paper gives more precise edges. Test the eraser and blending stump on the same sheet, as harsh rubbing can burnish fibers and cause subsequent layers to adhere unevenly.
