Scratch images and engraving art sets reveal a contrasting or metallic layer when the dark top layer is scratched away in a controlled manner.

Choose difficulty and image size consciously

Pre-printed lines make a set more accessible; free scratch plates give more space for your own design. Look at size, level of detail, undercolor and supplied tools. A larger image is not always easier: fine hatching also requires patience and a steady hand.

Work from light lines to deep contrasts

Place the plate on a hard, clean surface and rotate the work in the direction of your line. Scratch thinly at first and only widen after checking; remove dust with a soft dry brush. A scratch cannot be repaired, so test pressure and tools on an edge or test piece before working on large areas.
