Charcoal & Graphite
Charcoal delivers broad, deep and easily erasable tones; graphite provides control from light construction lines to glossy dark drawing work.
Hardness and shape determine the trace
Hard graphite pencils maintain a fine point, while soft gradations are darker and smear faster. Pressed charcoal is powerful and even; natural willow or vine charcoal is lighter and easily erasable. Blocks are suitable for planes and broad gestures, pencils for details and controlled edges.
Paper, erasers and fixing
Paper with teeth holds more material; a smooth surface supports precise lines. Use a kneaded eraser to lighten tone without harsh sanding. Fixative may change color and shine, so test it first and work with adequate ventilation. Place a clean sheet under your drawing hand to limit smears.
