What Is Cyanotype and How Does It Work?

Cyanotype is one of the oldest photographic printing techniques, invented in the 19th century. The process is simple, safe with basic precautions, and produces striking Prussian blue images – also known as blueprints.

It works by coating paper or fabric with a solution of ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. Once dry, the material becomes light-sensitive. Exposing it to UV light or sunlight develops the print, and rinsing in water reveals the deep blue image.
