Modelling & Sculpting
Materials for modeling and sculpting differ in drying method, shrinkage, strength and the details they can retain.
Air-drying, oven-hardening or permanently flexible
Air-drying clay can be used immediately but can crack if it is of uneven thickness. Polymer clay cures according to a precise temperature schedule; modeling wax and plastiline remain workable. Choose tools and reinforcement based on scale, wall thickness and whether the object will be functional or decorative.
Avoid cracks and weak connections
Work with even thicknesses, connect parts according to the instructions of the material and let air-dried work dry slowly and on several sides. Do not add paint or varnish until the core is completely dry or hardened. For heat-setting materials, use a reliable oven temperature and do not use utensils that will subsequently be used for food.
