Oil Paint
Oil paint offers long mixing times, deep color and gradual transitions, but requires attention to layer build-up, drying agents and safe cleaning.
Pigment, binder and consistency
Artist-grade paint usually contains more pigment and information about transparency and lightfastness; student-grade paint is practical for large exercises. Some colors dry faster than others. Choose mediums for a clear purpose, such as flow or accelerated drying, and do not arbitrarily mix multiple additives.
Build stable layers
Work on a suitably primed base and leave subsequent layers sufficiently flexible and oily compared to previous layers. Ventilate well and limit solvents. Store and dispose of cloths or paper soaked in drying oil in a fire-safe manner, as they can spontaneously ignite due to heat development. Only varnish when the painting has hardened sufficiently according to the material and layer thickness.
