Cyanotype Paper

Paper for cyanotype must absorb the light-sensitive solution evenly, tolerate wet rinsing and remain sufficiently flat after drying.

Weight, surface sizing and structure

Preferably choose acid-free paper with sufficient wet strength. Medium to heavy weight paper is easier to handle during washing. Lots of surface sizing or a very smooth surface can slow down absorption. Cotton-based watercolor paper often gives a rich tone, but affordable cellulose paper can also work well after a small test.

Testing before a full series

Cut a test strip, apply the same solution with the same brush and record drying time, exposure and rinse time. Assess not only the blue, but also stains, fiber damage and change in paper dimensions. Store untreated paper dry and coated paper dark; use separate tools for application and rinsing.
