The best paper for cyanotype absorbs the photosensitive solution evenly, remains firm during rinsing, and is not highly alkaline buffered. Watercolor paper is often the safest choice, but weight, surface, sizing and composition determine how much detail and contrast you ultimately get.

What properties should cyanotype paper have?

  • Uncoated and absorbent: the emulsion must be able to penetrate the top fiber layer without immediately sinking.
  • Good wet strength: the sheet should withstand several minutes of rinsing without tearing or pilling.
  • Acid-free and not highly alkaline: high alkaline buffering can weaken the blue color.
  • Even surface: this prevents stains and makes the coating more predictable.
  • Suitable size and weight: heavier paper stays flatter and is easier to handle.

Why watercolor paper often works best

Watercolor paper is designed to absorb water and tolerate wet operations. Therefore, it is usually more suitable than printer paper, smooth drawing paper or strongly coated cardboard. A weight of about 250 to 300 g/m² is nice for loose works of art: it rinses easily, deforms less and feels sturdy.

Smooth, cold-pressed or rough paper?

Smooth or hot-pressed

Smooth paper is ideal for digital negatives, photography and images with fine lines. The direct contact between negative and paper remains better and small details are displayed sharper. However, a very closed or heavily glued surface can slow down absorption, so always test.

Cold-pressed or fine-grained

Cold-pressed watercolor paper offers a good balance between detail, absorption and a visible handmade character. It is suitable for botanical photograms, abstract work and general applications.

Rough paper

A rough structure gives expressive results, but fine details and smooth color areas become less predictable. This relief can be attractive for leaves, feathers and organic shapes.

Is cotton paper better than cellulose paper?

One hundred percent cotton often has excellent wet strength, long lifespan and good absorption. It is a good choice for salable artwork and archival purposes. However, high-quality cellulose paper can work well for studies, workshops and short runs and is usually cheaper. The actual composition and gluing are more important than just the word “watercolor paper” on the packaging.

Which types of paper often cause problems?

  • Photo paper and glossy coated paper: the emulsion remains on the surface and may dry unevenly or wash away.
  • Thin printer paper: wrinkles easily, tears when washed and often gives a spotty coating.
  • Strong alkaline buffered paper: may damage the Prussian blue or give a weaker result.
  • Recycled paper with unknown additives: can work very well, but always requires a test due to varying fibers and fillers.
  • Colored paper: changes the contrast and the final color experience; test the wet and dry print.

How do you test unknown paper?

  1. Cut several small strips from the same sheet.
  2. Apply the same amount of freshly mixed emulsion to each strip.
  3. Let them dry completely in the dark.
  4. Expose with increasing times under the same UV source.
  5. Rinse each strip in the same way and allow to dry completely.
  6. Compare smoothness, maximum blue depth, fine details and distortion.

How much emulsion does paper need?

More solution does not automatically produce a deeper blue. A thin, even coating is usually better than a wet layer. Use a soft foam brush or coating rod and coat the surface with as few overlapping movements as possible. Allow to dry horizontally and completely in the dark.

Do you need to pre-treat paper?

Good cyanotype paper usually does not require any pretreatment. When a paper is clearly alkaline or repels the solution, another paper is often simpler and more reproducible than experimenting with chemical prebaths. For important work: test a small part first and note brand, series and batch.

Best choice per application

  • Beginners and workshops: affordable cold-pressed watercolor paper of approximately 250–300 g/m².
  • Photographic negatives: smooth, sturdy and finely textured paper.
  • Botanical prints: fine- or medium-grain watercolor paper that retains sufficient detail.
  • Sales and archiving: acid-free cotton paper with high wet strength.
  • Experiments: handmade and recycled paper, but always test first.

Can cyanotype be used on plain paper?

Yes, but thin printer paper is more likely to warp and tear. For a reliable result, watercolor paper is usually more suitable.

Is 300 g/m² necessary?

No. It is especially practical because of its firmness during rinsing. Lighter paper can work when the fibers, sizing and pH are appropriate.

Why does my paper turn yellow after rinsing?

Often unused chemicals have not yet been completely removed. Rinse longer with clean water. If the problem persists, test different paper and check your coating and drying time.
