Paint a Halloween tote bag: pumpkins and bats with fabric paint
Make a reusable Halloween tote with fabric paint. Choose opaque or transparent colours, prevent bleed-through and follow the correct fixing instructions.
A painted cotton tote is a practical Halloween project that you can use again next year. Choose a clear pumpkin and a few bats instead of lots of tiny details. The result depends on more than the design: the fabric’s colour and composition determine suitable paint and heat setting.

Protect a clean cotton tote with cardboard inside. Stencil thin layers of suitable fabric paint, allow to dry and fix according to both the paint label and the fabric care label.

Choose the paint and tote
For a dark bag, choose an opaque range such as Pébéo Setacolor Opaque. For pale fabric and transparent effects, explore Setacolor Light Fabrics. Do not assume every range has the same fixing method. Prepare a clean cotton bag, a cardboard separator, stencil, brush or suitable stencil brush, and table protection. Browse the colours in fabric paints.
Choose opaque or transparent fabric paint to suit the bag colour. The pale cotton tote shown is a surface option. Select suitable brush sizes, prewash without fabric softener and check the care label before fixing.
Plan the bag before painting
Lay the tote flat and position the design with the handles clear. Choose one large pumpkin and two smaller bats, away from thick seams. Test the stencil on paper first. A scrap of similar fabric helps you practise coverage, paint loading and lifting the stencil. Plan the project before the day you need the bag: drying and fixing are part of the process.
Paint your Halloween bag

- Check the fabric. Read the washing and ironing label. Prewash new fabric without softener and dry completely. A coating or finish can affect adhesion. Test an inconspicuous area first.
- Protect the reverse. Insert clean cardboard so paint cannot bleed through to the other side. Lay the fabric flat without stretching it out of shape.
- Position the design. Make a simple pumpkin-and-bats stencil with space between shapes. Orange on black may need a second thin coat; judge coverage after the first has dried.
- Use little paint at a time. Dab around the stencil edge and work inwards. An overloaded brush encourages paint to seep underneath. Lift the stencil carefully without smearing wet paint.
- Let it dry. Do not pull the bag away from its cardboard while the paint is still wet. Follow the paint’s drying instructions and keep painted areas from touching.
- Fix the exact paint range. Follow the packaging and check whether the bag tolerates the required heat. Pébéo describes ironing Setacolor Opaque from the reverse for five minutes on the cotton setting, without steam. Use this only when it matches your product’s instructions. Do not assume synthetic fabric tolerates the same temperature.
- Check before use. Let the work cool and check for loose paint or accidentally stuck fabric layers. Follow the product’s waiting time and washing instructions.
Blurred edges or poor coverage?
Try less paint on the brush, a closer-fitting stencil and thinner coats. Pale transparent paint often disappears on dark fabric; choose an opaque range instead. Do not soak the whole bag to correct one small mistake. An extra bat can incorporate an uneven edge into the design.
Keep your bag for next Halloween
Wash and care for it according to both paint and fabric instructions. Our Opaque versus Light Fabrics guide explains the differences. Check Pébéo’s Setacolor Opaque instructions for fixing and care. This is decorative paint, not a cosmetic: do not paint skin or use the bag as unprotected food packaging.
Frequently asked questions about Halloween totes
Can I use ordinary acrylic paint?
Choose paint intended for fabric for this project. Ordinary acrylic does not automatically offer the same flexibility or washing instructions. Do not add an arbitrary medium expecting every combination to become suitable.
Why is orange barely visible on black?
Check whether you used a transparent or opaque range. Choose an appropriate opaque product for dark fabric and test thin coats. More transparent paint is not a reliable substitute for choosing the right paint.
When can I wash the bag?
After complete drying, any required fixing and the product’s specified waiting time. Combine the paint instructions with the bag’s care label. If they conflict, choose a different combination before painting.
Paint the second side
Complete the first side before turning the bag and inserting clean protective cardboard again. Keep the reverse simpler, perhaps with one bat. Store the stencil dry and flat for a repair or another project.
