Paint Halloween glass jars: pumpkins and bats with LED lights

An empty glass jar can become a Halloween lantern with an orange pumpkin and black bats. Transparent colour lets the LED light shine through; dark silhouettes create contrast. This project makes an indoor decoration, not a drinking glass or food container. Start with one test jar before making a whole set.

Your project at a glance

Paint a clean glass jar with glass paint, let the layers dry and cure, then add LED lighting. Use it as decoration and keep real candles out.

Materials and paint choices

Prepare an undamaged glass jar, fine and wider brushes, sketch paper, a protected work surface and an LED light. Choose Pébéo Vitrea 160 glass paint for a water-based glass-paint system. Pébéo Vitrail transparent paint is solvent-based: these ranges are not interchangeable. Do not mix them; use compatible accessories and cleaning methods. Explore the colours in glass and porcelain paints.

Choose what you need

Choose Vitrea 160 or Vitrail; they are different paint systems. Select a fine round and a flat brush. The brush option shown is for the water-based route; with Vitrail, check suitability and cleaning against the paint label.

Plan a clear design before painting

Start with a pumpkin on the front and two small bats beside it. A broad orange shape remains recognisable on a shelf; fine lines can disappear at a distance. Test the sketch inside the glass with the LED light behind it. Move overlapping shapes and leave a clear strip near the rim. Finish the fronts first, turning jars only when the paint has dried sufficiently.

Left to right: clean glass and a sketch, thin areas of colour, the finished jar with LED lighting. Illustrative example; follow the instructions for your own materials.
  1. Clean and degrease. Remove the label and adhesive. Wash the jar, degrease as directed for your paint and let it dry completely. Avoid touching the painting surface afterwards.
  2. Sketch a simple design. Draw a broad pumpkin with a short stalk and two bats. Place the sketch inside the jar as a temporary guide. Leave clear spaces between shapes so that light can shine through.
  3. Apply thin layers. Paint the pumpkin first. Avoid puddles that can run down curved glass. Support the jar securely while working on a small area, without touching wet paint.
  4. Add the silhouettes. Let the first colour dry as instructed before adding neighbouring details. Paint bats with a fine brush, starting with their main shapes and finishing with smaller details.
  5. Allow the paint to cure. Follow the instructions for the exact range. Pébéo describes heat setting for Vitrea 160, but the object must also be suitable for heating. Do not bake an unidentified reused jar on the assumption that it is oven-safe. Vitrail does not automatically receive the same treatment.
  6. Add LED lighting. Use a battery-powered LED light or string, never an open flame. Keep the battery holder and electronics dry.

Common painting problems

Paint pulls away: check for grease, adhesive or moisture and repeat your test. Brush marks: apply an even thin layer and avoid repeatedly brushing through partly dried paint. Details spread: allow neighbouring areas to dry first. Keep the jar indoors unless weather and washing resistance have been confirmed for your exact materials.

Safe use and further reading

Read the label and safety information, ventilate when using solvent-based paint and keep paint away from children. Do not decorate surfaces that contact food. Our guide to glass preparation, outlines and drying explains the underlying technique. Check Pébéo’s product-specific Vitrea instructions before heat setting.

Frequently asked questions about Halloween lanterns

Can I use ordinary acrylic paint?

Do not assume the same adhesion, transparency or durability as a suitable glass-paint system. Choose paint intended for glass and test your jar. An opaque layer also gives a different lighting effect.

Does every painted jar need baking?

No. Both paint and glass determine whether heat setting is appropriate. Follow the exact paint range and verify the object’s heat resistance. Oven-fixable paint does not make an unsuitable jar oven-safe.

Can I put a candle inside or wash the jar?

This project uses LED lighting only. Do not promise dishwasher resistance for an unknown jar-and-paint combination. Treat it as decoration and clean cautiously according to the selected product instructions.

Make a coordinated set

Repeat a small colour palette across several jars and vary the bats’ placement. This creates a coherent set without copying every drawing exactly. Allow all layers to dry and cure fully before storing the decorations.
