Is cyanotype poisonous? Safety of the chemicals explained
Cyanotype is often described as a relatively safe photographic process, but “relatively safe” does not mean the chemicals can be used without precaution. Ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide have a different risk profile than free cyanides when used normally, but you should avoid ingestion, inhalation of powder and unnecessary skin or eye contact. Always read the safety data sheet of the product you actually use.
What chemicals does Cyanotype use?
The classic method works with two inventory solutions:
- Ferric ammonium citrate: an iron salt that becomes light-sensitive with organic components.
- Potassium ferricyanide: a stable complex iron salt that contributes to the formation of Prussian blue after exposure.
The names sound heavier than the risk of use in small creative quantities, but that is no reason to ignore labels or safety instructions.
Is potassium ferricyanide the same as cyanide?
No. In potassium ferricyanide, cyanide groups are strongly bound in an iron complex. The product should not be treated as if it were free hydrogen cyanide. At the same time, caution remains necessary: avoid strong acids and high heating, as unfavorable conditions can cause dangerous decomposition products. Mix it only according to a proven cyanotype recipe.
Risks of ferric ammonium citrate
Ferric ammonium citrate can irritate skin, eyes and respiratory tract, especially if fine powder is inhaled or comes into the eyes. Work quietly, avoid dust formation and close the packaging immediately. A liquid stock solution reduces flying powder, but spills still require prompt, controlled cleanup.
Practical safety measures
- Work on a washable, protected surface with good ventilation.
- Wear suitable gloves when mixing and coating; for example, see the nitrile gloves .
- Wear eye protection when splashes are possible.
- Use measuring cups, pipettes and brushes only for creative work.
- Do not eat, drink or smoke in the workplace.
- Label both solutions with name and date and store them dark, closed and out of the reach of children and pets.
- Wash hands afterwards, even if you were wearing gloves.
What do you do in case of spills or contact?
First of all, follow the safety data sheet for the specific product. In case of skin contact, remove contaminated clothing and rinse the skin with plenty of water. In case of eye contact, rinse carefully with clean water for a long time and seek medical attention if irritation persists. In case of ingestion or major exposure, contact a doctor or local poison control center and have the label or safety data sheet at hand.
Is cyanotype suitable for children?
Cyanotype can be a good workshop technique under direct supervision, but do not allow children to weigh powders or prepare stock solutions themselves. An adult can pre-coat material or use ready-made, treated sheets. Provide hand washing, supervision and a workplace without food or drink. Adapt the activity to age, behavior and local educational rules.
Safely rinse and process waste
Use small amounts and mix only what is necessary. Do not leave concentrated residues unattended and do not pour unknown or contaminated mixtures down the drain. Rules for chemical waste vary by municipality and country; follow the product safety sheet and the instructions of your local waste processor. Avoid contact of cyanotype with strong acids, bleach and aggressive cleaning agents.
Are finished cyanotypes safe to touch?
A properly exposed and thoroughly rinsed print contains the blue pigment in the fibers and is normally touched as a work of art. However, a print is not a food-safe surface and should not be placed on tableware, cutting boards or materials that come into direct contact with food. Rinse until yellow-green residue is gone and the water remains clear.
Cyanotype on clothing and utensils
Cyanotype is less wash-fast on textiles than a real textile paint. Wash finished pieces sparingly, cold and with a phosphate-free detergent. Should I always wear gloves?
This is wise when weighing, mixing and coating. Gloves are generally not necessary for a completely dry, well-rinsed print.
Can I make cyanotype in the kitchen?
Preferably use a separate workplace. If that is not possible, remove all food and utensils, protect the surface and clean thoroughly afterwards. Never use bowls or spoons that will be used for food later.
Is “non-toxic” the same as “harmless”?
No. Materials with a relatively low risk can also cause irritation or problems if used incorrectly. A safe working method remains part of the process.
