How to coat cyanotype evenly: foam brush, soft brush or coating rod?
Avoid streaks, bare spots and wasted solution when coating cyanotype paper.
An even coating makes exposure tests easier to compare and reduces bare patches, hard starts and wasted solution. A perfectly smooth rectangle is not always the goal: visible brush edges can be part of the print. Decide on the finish first and test on the same paper you will use for the final work.
Choose a foam brush, soft brush or coating rod
A cyanotype foam brush spreads liquid without shedding hairs and suits small to medium sheets. Use light pressure; pressing hard pushes solution towards the edges. A broad soft brush leaves a more visible handmade stroke. A glass coating rod can produce a thin, repeatable layer but needs a level surface and practice. Prepare the paper, workspace and solution
Use clean, dry paper that absorbs the solution evenly. Heavy cyanotype paper generally stays flatter during coating and washing than thin paper. Work away from direct sunlight under dim artificial light, protect the table and use clean tools reserved for this process. Wear suitable gloves and follow the label of your cyanotype chemicals. Mix only the amount required by the instructions and never pour used liquid back into the stock bottles.
How much sensitizer should you use?
There is no universal amount per sheet: paper absorbency, format, tool and the intended border all affect consumption. Start with a small measured amount according to the product directions. Add a little only if the tool no longer glides smoothly. A puddle creates dark edges, streaks and longer drying; too little leaves dry skips. Record the paper, size and amount so a successful coating can be repeated.
Step by step: coat without streaks or bare patches
- Lay the paper flat and remove dust with a clean, dry brush.
- Place small drops or a narrow line of sensitizer along one edge of the image area.
- Use light, overlapping passes in one direction, followed by no more than one crosswise pass while still wet.
- Finish the outside edge deliberately and prevent liquid pooling.
- Stop when the area has an even sheen. Continued brushing as it starts to dry pulls the layer open again.
- Dry flat, in darkness and with good ventilation, following the product instructions.

Fix streaks, specks and dark edges
