Make a reliable digital negative for cyanotype using correct inversion, transparency film, printer settings and a short calibration test.

A good digital negative determines how much detail and tonal range your cyanotype retains. It does not simply need to be as black as possible: dark areas must block enough UV while lighter areas still transmit light in a controlled way. Use this workflow to build a small, repeatable test before spending a full sheet.

What does a digital negative do?

Cyanotype turns dark blue where UV reaches the coating. A digital negative therefore reverses the tones: bright parts of the photograph become dark on film, while dark parts become more transparent. Use our free cyanotype negative generator to convert to grayscale, invert and mirror when needed.

What you need

Use transparency film made for your printer type. An inkjet coating holds more ink than a smooth universal sheet. Our A4 inkjet transparencies are intended for digital cyanotype negatives. You also need plain paper for a first check, a printer with a high-quality mode and a small piece of coated cyanotype paper.

Step by step

  1. Edit the photograph at normal brightness first and convert it to grayscale.
  2. Invert the tones. Mirror only when text, faces or direction must read correctly and the printed side will face the paper during contact printing.
  3. Set the document to final print size. About 300 ppi is sufficient for photographs; artificial enlargement creates no new detail.
  4. Print on plain paper first to check crop, direction and size.
  5. Print on the coated side of the film using the best photo or monochrome setting. Let the ink dry completely and avoid touching it.
  6. Expose a small test strip with the same coating, UV source and contact plate as the final print.

Printer settings: a starting point, not a universal recipe

Printers, inks, films and UV sources differ. Start with high print quality, the paper setting that lays down the most ink without smearing, 100% scale and automatic image correction disabled. Change one setting at a time. Two perfectly aligned thin negatives can block more UV, but also risk softness; calibration is usually better.

Calibrate with a small tonal strip

Place a strip with white, light gray, mid-gray, dark gray and black beside part of the image. Expose it using your normal cyanotype exposure time, wash fully and judge the dry print. Then change only one factor: exposure, printer density or image curve.

For a sharp contact print
